Octane Coffee Billboard Design

My final project for Advertising Illustration is to design an ad for either Octane Coffee or the Atlanta Cupcake Factory. I’m going with a billboard design for Octane targeted towards morning commuters.

Step 1: Thumbnails

I was initially working on an ad for Octane’s new Pocket Bar opening up downtown, but was having trouble coming up with ideas. I drew the guy on the bottom while thinking and ended up liking it, so I added some color to see what I could do with the background.

I liked the design enough to abandon my Pocket Bar idea and go with a billboard design instead. The next step was to fix the composition.

Step 2: Initial Comp

I’m going with a smaller format for the billboard (5×11) so I can draw attention to the illustration and keep the design somewhat minimal. I played with the idea changing the character to a moon, but it just looked like he had boils on his face

I didn’t want to scare off potential customers, so I got rid of the moon character and went back to my original idea.

Step 3: Color

I added in the background colors again along with some trees and clouds to fill up the negative space. With the color and composition finalized, I can now start working on a tighter version and possibly take it to the final stages.
